NWU Transformative Agreements: Science Direct (Elsevier)

ScienceDirect (Elsevier) Agreement

This agreement is a three-year agreement (2023-2025) that commenced in 2023.

Institutions participating in this agreement have access to over 1660 subscription-based journal titles in the ScienceDirect freedom collection, and affiliated authors can publish their articles open access in these hybrid titles without paying article processing charges(APCs).

South African researchers will receive a higher discount when publishing in fully OA journals listed here -143 journals:  https://www.elsevier.com/about/policies-and-standards/pricing/gpoa-journals-list  

39 Gold/Fully OA journals from Elsevier (The Elsevier agreement covers 100% of the APC for publishing in hybrid journals and offers a 15% discount on gold/fully OA journals. However, for these 38 specific gold/fully OA journals, the APC will be fully covered at 100%.)

How does the process work?

The process of publishing under the agreement is straightforward:

  • Step 1 – Once the journal accepts your article, you will receive an email containing a link to the “post-acceptance author journey”.
  • Step 2 – You will be asked to review your affiliation and funder details. Based on this information, you will see personalised publishing options, including the opportunity to publish under the agreement.
  • Step 3 – You will confirm your publishing choices and complete the post-acceptance journey.
  • Step 4 – Your institution will validate your eligibility for the agreement
  • Step 5 – You and your co-authors will receive an email to confirm that the agreement will cover the APC. Please note that the number of APCs included under the agreement is fixed and will be allocated based on the date of acceptance.

When you submit your submission, the system will present you with personalised publishing options, including any agreement or offer you may be eligible for. You can indicate your publishing choice during submission, but you are only required to finalise your choice after acceptance.
